Essaouira is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Formerly known as Mogador, it recalls the days when Spain, Portugal and England fought for control of its coastline. Essaouira is located on Morocco's western Atlantic coast. It was here that director and actor Orson Welles shot his film “Othello”.
Essaouira is a cultural town with many small art galleries, as well as Moroccan cabinet makers and blacksmiths. The Gnaoua festival of world music has been held here every year since 1998. During your day trip to this 18th-century medieval seaside town, you'll discover pretty whitewashed colonnades with blue shutters, thuja wood workshops, art galleries and mouth-watering seafood.
Depart Marrakech around 08:00 for a 3-hour journey to beautiful Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. Once you arrive at the port city, once known as Mogador, you'll have time to enjoy Essaouira's charming sights, including its ochre-colored walls, the beautiful Place Moulay El Hassan and souks, and the narrow streets of the city's ancient medina. Enjoy a fresh fish lunch in a local restaurant. During your trip, discover the local markets and marvel at the gems of the jewelry district. You'll return to Marrakech in the late afternoon, arriving in the “Red City” at around 7:00 pm.
